FINEST QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP

At Copeland Furniture we spend countless hours designing and re-designing our furniture so that it is as aesthetically pleasing as we know how to make it. We have built a reputation on carefully proportioned, understated clean designs. However, quality is more than just what meets the eye. True quality is determined as much by what is inside the furniture as by what you can see. Carefully selected natural hardwoods, time honored joinery techniques, drawer construction and superior protective finishes are distinguishing features that set quality furniture apart. Here are some quality features you can see in all of our furniture pieces.

SELECT HARDWOODS

We construct furniture made of natural hardwoods. We work with four different species of natural hardwoods, each with its own timeless character and unique appeal. Cherry, hard maple, ash and American black walnut are the select hardwoods that we use to build our furniture. We look for distinguishing characteristics when we select hardwoods: color, grain pattern, density and finishing quality. We use only lightly pigmented transparent stains. We prefer to rely on the natural beauty of carefully selected hardwoods from the Northern Forest.

  • Maple: We use hard maple, better known as sugar maple. This heavy wood is characterized by straight grain or clusters of round curls known as burls, and is highly resistant to abrasion and indentation. The natural color ranges from clear cream to light brown.

  • Cherry: Cherry has superior woodworking characteristics. It is a strong hard wood that has subtle grain pattern and uniform texture that finishes very well. Its light-reddish brown color darkens with exposure to sunlight.

  • Walnut: American black walnut is a dense wood that has plain to highly figured grain. The color is often light gray-brown to dark purplish-brown, and has a rich patina that grows more lustrous with age.

JOINERY AND CASE CONSTRUCTION

The stability and durability of a piece of furniture are determined by the strength of the joinery used in construction. We focus on the details, some of which are not immediately apparent. This attention to detail assures that the furniture we build will last for generations to come.

Dovetailed cross rails add strength to the case. The dovetail joint is self-locking and will not separate from the side panel.

Drawers are constructed utilizing an asymmetrical English dovetail - the traditional standard for drawer construction.

Solid hardwood interior corner blocks stabilize the furniture.

Drawer sides and backs are a full 5/8" thick solid hardwood. Drawer fronts are 3/4" thick solid hardwood; drawer bottoms are "jet-welded" in place to make the drawer more rigid and to minimize rattling or vibration.

The interior of all drawer boxes are sanded smooth and fully finished. Drawer glides are adjustable to assure proper alignment of the drawer and guarantee proper functioning of drawers in all climates. All drawers have pivot drawer stops. The pivot drawer stops prevent the drawer from tumbling out of the case piece.

Case tops, corner posts, frames and end panels are made of solid hardwood. (The end panels of the Sarah, Berkeley and Cartesian cases utilize selected veneer panels.) Case backs are selected veneer panels and are sanded and finished to match the entire piece.

PROTECTIVE FINISH

At Copeland Furniture, we use a catalyzed conversion varnish. This finish is formulated to meet KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) standards - a much more durable finish than conventional furniture finishes. It resists stains, moisture rings and spots, as well as heat damage from hot beverages. It resists scratches and abrasions from metal objects such as keys and coins. The finish provides lasting protection against the wear of daily use.

CARE OF YOUR FURNITURE

When we make a piece of Copeland Furniture, we hope that it will be used and cherished by generations to come, so we have created a clear finish that is silky, smooth to the touch and still tough enough to stand up to the wear and tear of daily family activities. To preserve the beauty of the finish, simply clean the surface of the furniture with a soft damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly. Care over the years to come will not require oil, polishes, or cleaners.

Natural hardwoods have specific characteristics that make them warm and appealing to the eye. Swirls, knots and burls are some characteristics that contribute to the natural beauty of finely crafted hardwood furniture. Hardwoods oxidize, or change color, from exposure to direct light. The color of the wood will deepen over time and take on a warm glow and soft patina.
